About Marla Heller, MS, RD
Marla
Heller is a Registered Dietitian, and holds a Master of Science in Human
Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) where
she has recently completed course work on a PhD in Behavior Sciences and Health
Promotion (and is currently preparing for prelims as part of the PhD process). She is experienced in a wide variety of nutrition
counseling specialties. She has been an adjunct clinical instructor in the
Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics at UIC, teaching courses on foods
and nutrition counseling, and has also taught at Dominican University,
National-Louis University, and the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of
Chicago. Marla has been a preceptor for dietetic interns from UIC and the
University of Delaware. She is on the advisory board for Chicago Health &
Beauty.
Marla is the author of The
DASH Diet Action Plan, she wrote the 4-week menu plan for
Win the Weight Game by Sarah, the Duchess of York, and Weight Watchers
Publishing, and wrote the healthy eating chapter in the recently published book,
"I Always Start My
Diet on Mondays!" by Janice Alpert. She was a recipe contributor
to MasterCook Deluxe Low Carb v7.0. She has been a featured nutrition
expert for the Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, Daily Herald, Pioneer Press, Chicago
Health & Beauty, WGN-AM and WNUR-FM. She frequently speaks at corporations, schools, health clubs, and athletic
facilities. She is a spokesperson for the Greater Midwest affiliate of the American
Heart Association.
She is a Past President of the Illinois Dietetic Association (2002-2003), and is
a Past President of the North Suburban Dietetic Association
(2000-2001). She was recently awarded the
prestigious Emerging Leader Award from the Illinois Dietetic Association.
Marla lives with her husband Richard (who is also in the health care field, on the
consulting side) and she enjoys gardening,
cooking, entertaining, travel, has an extensive cook book collection, and
periodically gets involved in cat rescue in her neighborhood. She keeps fit
through a combination of aerobic exercise (a combination of running and walking
about 3.5 - 4 miles on a treadmill) 3 - 4 days per week, and SuperSlow resistance training 1 day per week. She tries to follow a
modified DASH diet, low in refined carbs. All of
which makes her
feel like she is 25!
